IHSS Payroll Information
IHSS Payroll consists of three (3) staff clerks which perform the processing for over 2,000 IHSS providers. IHSS payroll staff are responsible for many functions which include: maintain information on new clients, process new providers, and changes in hours approved for a consumer, just to name a few.
Phone Calls
IHSS Payroll answers phone calls by providers with payroll questions. Due to the volumne of calls and their priorities to process your timecards for payment, IHSS Payroll will not return all phone calls. Specifically if the questions are for a timecard which is under the ten (10) day turn-around time provider. IHSS payroll will return phone calls for the following:
- It is over the ten (10) day turnaround and you have not received your paycheck.
- If they have researched a question or problem with your timecard or paycheck and have an answer for you.
- If payment has been delayed.
Initial training on how to complete a timecard is avaible at your provider orientation. The provider enrollment form must be received for new providers. Please call 454-4036 if you need assistance with your time card.

- If you mail your timecard the ten (10) working days start the day IHSS Payroll receives your timecard.
- Checks should arrive from the State of California within 10 working days (not counting weekends & holidays) after the County receives the timecard and as long as the timecard is correctly filled out and signed by both parties.
- Working days are Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, not including holidays or possible County furloughs.
Authorized Hours
You must know ahead of time what tasks and hours are authorized for the consumers by IHSS. You can find this information on the Notice of Action (NOA) mailed to the consumer. You should ask to see this document. If the consumer has more then one provider, the hours must be assigned as appropriate between them and not go over the hours authorized. If the consumer has you working more then the authorized hours it is the responsiblity of the family to pay the care provider for this time. IHSS can only pay for hours authorized on the Notice of Action. It is a good idea to understand how the consumer is splitting up the hours so you do not work over the authorized hours. If you need assistance regarding the allocation of hours please call the IHSS Social Worker at (831) 454-4101 or (831) 763-8800.
Tips to Avoid Delays
- Timecards must be signed by both the care provider and the consumer on the last working day of the pay period.
- Make sure authorized hours are recorded correctly.
- Make sure your timecard shows does not you worked more then the authorized hours for the consumer.
- Ensure your timecard is complete and readable.
